What is an e-ticket for public transport?

An e-ticket for public transport is a digital train ticket that you purchase in advance and use on a specific date, route, and in a selected travel class. This ticket is only valid for the carrier(s) listed on the ticket.

A single e-ticket can be used once for a single journey, while a day return e-ticket is valid for both a return journey on the same day. You must show the e-ticket on your phone or tablet when asked. You must also check in at a gate or pole with a barcode reader.

Your last name and initials are printed on the e-ticket. Make sure you have valid photo ID with you during your journey; the name on your ID must match the details on the ticket.

Please note: a surcharge applies for travel with ICE International or with the Intercity direct between Rotterdam Centraal and Schiphol. You can purchase this at an NS ticket machine.
